Shipyard Liaison Engineer
Company: Naval Nuclear Laboratory
Posted on: June 4, 2021
The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is seeking a Shipyard Liaison
Engineer (SLE) to support reactor servicing operations at naval
shipyards and naval prototype locations.
The primary role of the successful candidate involves acting as
the interface between those performing the work in the field (at
shipyards and prototypes) and the primary design agency where the
SLE is located (Schenectady, NY) during reactor servicing
evolutions. The evolutions involved with this role include the
defueling and inactivation at end of reactor life.
Examples of SLE areas of support include leading troubleshooting
efforts and providing resolution to any problems with NNL provided
equipment or procedures used in the field, review and concurrence
with field repairs of equipment involved in reactor servicing
operations, or modifications to established procedures. As the
primary interface at NNL, the SLE is not expected to be an expert
on all aspects of reactor servicing tooling and procedures, but
must develop a working knowledge of the system and be able to
expediently distribute information to the correct individuals
and/or organizations and coordinate a timely and accurate response
to support field operations. During everyday work efforts, the SLE
is expected to build and maintain strong and productive teaming
relationships with individuals at Naval shipyard, government
regulators, procurement engineers, and other technical support and
analysis groups at NNL.
Other SLE duties include participation in reactor servicing
system development and equipment design to provide an "end-user"
viewpoint. The organization within which the SLE works includes
system and equipment design engineers who are cognizant of the
various hardware and procedures that the SLE will be supporting the
field with. In order to perform this role, the SLE will develop an
understanding of current fleet plant/cores design, and apply a
systems perspective to ongoing and future servicing activities
associated with these plants/cores. The SLE will develop and
maintain a working knowledge of reactor servicing requirements
documents and methods for oversight of shipyard operations. The SLE
should proactively seek out risks, potential issues, and
opportunities associated with the servicing systems and work with
their organization to develop mitigation actions for risks and
action plans to realize opportunities.
